Rick and Morty are both voiced by Justin Roiland.¹⁾

Roiland had planned for the program to run in eleven-minute portions, but Adult Swim insisted on half-hour episodes.²⁾

Toon Boom Harmony is used to generate the show's animation, while Adobe Photoshop is used to create all of the backdrop art. Adobe After Effects is used for post-production.³⁾

The show's two titular characters are based on a pair of characters from co-creator Justin Roiland's animated short The Real Animated Adventures of Doc and Mharti.rickandmorty⁴⁾

Justin Roiland produced the House of Cosbys, a tiny animated program that resulted in multiple stop and desist letters from Bill Cosby's attorneys. To avoid a lawsuit, he decided to make a crude Back to the Future spoof called The Real Animated Adventures of Doc and Mharti, with his two characters dubbed Doc Smith and Mharti McDonhalds. When Roiland began editing the audio for this, he fell in love with the voices he'd done for the two characters and decided to abandon his protest in order to further develop the characters, eventually transforming them into Rick and Morty.⁵⁾

The opening and theme tune of Rick and Morty are a spoof of Doctor Who and Tintin.⁶⁾

Rick rejoined the Smith family one month before the events of the first episode of the show.⁷⁾

Earth Cesium-137 is the universe in which most of the events on Earth take place. That's why Rick and Morty are frequently referred to as “Rick C-137” and “Morty C-137”.⁸⁾

The second episode of the first season (Lawnmower Dog) is based on a pilot called DogWorld made by Justin Roiland for Cartoon Network, in which two youngsters discover a doorway to a realm populated by sentient dogs with human pets.⁹⁾

Also in this episode, Rick refers to Snuffles as “Ruffles”, which is the name of the dog family's human pet in DogWorld.¹⁰⁾

Snowball's accountant in Lawnmower Dog is voiced by Maurice LaMarche, who also played The Brain in Pinky and The Brain.¹¹⁾

Roiland improvises a lot on set when recording the show's dialogue, which he believes makes the lines more natural.¹²⁾

Because Rick spends the most of his time inebriated, Roiland tried method acting and going drunk before recording Rick's conversation. It didn't go well, and he barely finished recording!¹³⁾

Have you ever thought Rick's daughter Beth sounds familiar? That's because she's voiced by Sarah Chalke, who has previously portrayed Elliot in Scrubs, Stella in How I Met Your Mother, and Amy in Backstrom.¹⁴⁾
