Straits

Palk Strait

The Palk Strait is a strait between Ceylon and the Indian Peninsula, connecting the Bay of Bengal with the Gulf of Mannar in the Indian Ocean. There are many small islands in the strait including the Adam's Bridge chain of islets. 1)

Ten Degrees Channel

The Ten Degrees Channel, named after the fact that it is located along the parallel of 10 degrees north latitude. It is a sea channel that separates the Andaman and Nicobar archipelagos. It connects the Andaman Sea with the Indian Ocean. 2)

Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz is a waterway in the oil heartland of the world. It separates the Arabian Peninsula from the rest of mainland Asia, linking the Persian Gulf - home to 35% of the world's oil reserves and 45% of its natural gas reserves - with the Indian Ocean. 3)

Dardanelles Strait

The Dardanelles Strait, running between the Sea of Marmara and the Aegean Sea, separates the Balkan Peninsula from Anatolia (Turkey) and is also the border between Europe and Asia. 4)

Evripos Strait

The island of Euboea is separated from mainland Greece by a narrow strait called Evripos. “Evripos means “swift current” which aptly describes the strong currents in the strait which often reach speeds of almost 20 kilometers per hour. Typically, there are two high tides and two low tides per day. There are days when the current flows only one way or changes direction up to 14 times. The irregularity of the tides in the Evripos Strait is not fully explained. 5)
